Adoption Services

Sometimes children who enter foster care as a result of abuse or neglect cannot return to their birth families. Instead, they need adoptive families who are committed to them for a lifetime. Adoption offers a chance at a new beginning for many children to obtain a permanent and loving home and family.

Wolverine Human Services matches children with stable families through the adoption process. Children available for adoption are involved with Michigan's Foster Care system; they range in age between birth and seventeen years old. Most of the children available for adoption are between the ages of four and fifteen. Some of the children come from small and large sibling groups and others have physical or emotional problems. Wolverine Human Services works diligently to secure safe, nurturing and permanent homes for all children.

To be an adoptive parent you must:

Although children in the program initially feel frustrated regarding familial connections, an intense effort is made to assist the individual to rebuild and form strong and lasting family relationships. The SIL treatment team will assist the young person to explore potential reunification, adoption, guardianship and kinship opportunities.

Living Arrangements

• Provide a loving and stable home to a child
• Age — Applicants must be adults i.e. age 18
• Marital Status — both single and married persons may apply. If applicants are married, they must both apply. You cannot be separated and adopt.
• Be open to accepting a child's background and a willingness to learn about adoption issues.
• You do not need to be wealthy to adopt, but you must be financially able to meet the many needs of a child as well as your own needs
• Participate and successfully complete all required training and paper work functions/events.
Home study: A home study is a thorough report and assessment of your family to make sure that you can provide a safe and stable home for a child. In order to adopt a child you need to have a home study completed by an agency or person specifically trained and credentialed to provide adoption services. For children involved with Michigan's foster care system the home study is completed free of charge. Wolverine Human Services has trained staff available to support you and your family through this process.
