DHS Director to Speak at High School Graduation Ceremony in Saginaw

On April 25, 2013, five youth at Wolverine Secure Treatment Center will welcome Maura Corrigan, Director of the Department of Health and Human Services, as their high school graduation speaker at a ceremony in Saginaw, MI.

Wolverine Secure Treatment Center is a maximum-security facility for juveniles ages 12-19 who have been convicted of violent crimes. It is owned and operated by Wolverine Human Services, a nonprofit organization serving abused, neglected, and delinquent youth throughout the state of Michigan.

The youth are members of the first graduating class of Wolverine Academy, an in-house Strict Discipline Academy that serves children in Wolverine Human Services’ Detroit and Saginaw facilities. In addition to earning their high school diplomas, the youth have been working to overcome issues such as substance use, childhood trauma, and other mental health concerns.

Director Corrigan became interested in the graduation events after touring the facility and spending some time with the youth earlier this year.

“It’s going to be great to have Director Corrigan speak,” one youth said. “It makes us feel like our hard work is important. It makes me feel proud.”
