We love interns at Wolverine Human Services, and are proud to partner with 12 colleges and universities as a field placement site. We believe that one of the most important ways we can impact our field is by helping to grow and develop the next generation of professionals.

Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Toycia, who is working with our boys in Detroit to discover that they are truly special and talented.

Intern ToyciaName: Toycia Collins

Which WHS Program you work in: Juvenile Justice, Detroit Residential Facility

Level of Education: Currently Working on my Masters

Area of Study: Criminal Justice

University or College: Wayne State University

Hometown: Jamaica

Fun fact about you: Bought my first ever winter jacket in 2001

Why did you choose your area of study? I taught high school for 10 years and was tired of seeing kids who were on a path to end up in the system. I figured I needed to gather the tools to help break the cycle.

What do you find most interesting about your internship at Wolverine Human Services? I enjoy that I get to help the boys unearth a fact that was always there, the fact that they are truly special and talented.

What inspiration do you draw from the youth and/or staff at Wolverine Human Services? I am so impressed at the level of respect I see in their interactions with each other. I spend a lot of time with Greg Hoffman, Community Coordinator, when I am there, and the way he and others interact with the boys with mutual respect is amazing. Greg always shakes their hands and I think the boys love that, and it is a sign of reciprocal respect. I also love that so much emphasis is placed on developing programs that will truly help the boys to become victors (like the motto says).

What else should we know about you? The persons I have met at Wolverine are a blessing. It takes special people to help boys become the real men of tomorrow, and that transformation is what I see happening there.
