From time to time, we hear our community supporters say, “My $5 doesn’t mean much!” and “You can’t really do anything with a $10 donation.”
Well, that’s not true. For one thing, the success of our past fundraising campaigns, like #GivingTuesday, was built on $10 and $25 donations. For another thing, our clients and families have a wide variety of needs–meeting those needs is sometimes expensive, and sometimes not.
Take our Point Store, for example. The kids in our residential programs earn points for good behavior. (Help clean up after dinner=20 points, greet a visitor with a handshake and smile=5 points…you get the idea.) When they have saved up enough points, they are able to visit the Point Store.
Our staff does a wonderful job at keeping the Point Stores stocked with items that the kids want–everything from socks to Skittles, basketballs to Gatorade. These items are not expensive, but they can make a kid’s day!
The points system isn’t just for teaching good behavior. It is a basis for instilling values like patience, spending vs. saving, and negotiating. These are skills that every youth needs to practice.
Your $5 or $10 donation helps us stock the Points Store. It only takes $1 to buy a candy bar that will put a smile on the face of the kid who earns it!
